Jump to: navigation, search

Microbial opsins (type I opsins) are proteins found in unicellular algae, bacteria and archaebacteria. When bound to a retinal moiety they form photoreceptors called rhodopsins. Type I opsins are functionally similar to vertebrate opsins (type II opsins) but not homologous. Commonly used microbial rhodopsins in optogenetics include channelrhodopsins and light-driven pumps such as halorhodopsin and archaerhodopsins.
